If you are generating this file programatically you may find MPXJ helpful. There are a lot of great, free, self-hosted project management applications, but they take longer to set up and manage. Under Scheduling options for this project, in the Duration is entered in list, select a duration unit. In the Project Options dialog box, choose Schedule. There are a few odd settings required (for example, ProjectExternallyEdited, IsNull and so on) but the main difference is that I've specified the amount of work on both the task and the resource assignment. You can start your plan with the type Manually Schedule then you establish your baseline, you can change the taks as Auto-Schedule and it won't move your fixed dates but will start moving accordingly. In Project, the default task duration unit is days, but you can change it to be minutes, hours, weeks, or months: Choose File > Options. MS Project can be quite specific about what it wants to see in an XML file to get the results you are after. Why is that? Is there something missing (maybe a definition of calendar or some additional attributes of the task or assignment to resource?) When I import this to MS Project, it doesn't import the Start and Finish dates from the task and sets the duration to "0 days?". Can someone give me an example of a XML file which can be imported to MS Project, which would contain one task planned for some period of time and one resource? I currently have this following XML, MS Project imports it without any error, but the schedule becomes all messed up.
